My journey to becoming a chiropractor began when I was in high school.  I was a very good track athlete with the potential to compete at the collegiate level, but my running career was cut short by a somewhat unknown condition called compartment syndrome.

It is a painful and debilitating injury that affects the muscles of the calf and shin area.  There is a layer of tissue that surrounds all the muscles in the body it is called fascia, with compartment syndrome the fascia does not expand as the muscle expands thus causing intense pressure in the legs as well as decreased strength.  Imagine lifting weights, such as doing bicep curls with a metal band strapped around your bicep; it would cause a tight throbbing pain in your arm. That is what my legs felt like.

I went to many different doctors some chiropractors some medical doctors and nothing helped.  I eventually had three separate surgeries and still had the problem.  So after all the surgeries nothing helped, I still could not run.  By this time I had graduated from college with a degree in applied mathematics, and I was working as computer programmer.  I had been lifting weights and developed bicep tendonitis, so now I couldn’t run and I couldn’t lift weights either.  Someone recommended that I see a chiropractor that used this special soft tissue technique.  I decided to give him a try.
It was a great decision in a very short time I was active again lifting weights, and I even enjoyed temporary relief from my chronic leg problems.  I think that if I would have seen him prior to my leg surgeries I may have been able to run again.

I was originally planning to get my bachelors degree then work full time for two years then go to business school and get an MBA.  I graduated with a 3.72 GPA, and scored 96th percentile on the graduate management admissions test, and I had quality work experience.  I most likely would have been accepted at a prestigious business school.

However, I kept thinking about how great it would be to be in a profession that I could help people without drugs and surgeries that may not even help.  The bottom line is I made a huge decision to change careers to become a chiropractor.  I had to complete courses in biology, chemistry, and psychology prior to applying to chiropractic school. I completed all the prerequisites and entered chiropractic school.  In December of 1990, I graduated summa cum laude from Los Angeles College of Chiropractic and began my career as a chiropractor.
